| Name: | Casey Novak |
|---|
Character Name: Casey Novak
Series: Law and Order: SVU
Gender: Female
Age: Early 30s, going off of her actress
Species: Human
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Appearance: The first thing people notice about Casey is her (slightly lightened) red hair. It reaches her shoulders, and she's normally seen wearing it down, although for court, she's seen wearing it up, in a professional style. She's slightly taller than most women, putting her around 5'7" or so. She has brown eyes that seem to portray her emotions better than she shows outwardly. She's very pale, and doesn't seem to care about that, not attempting to tan or anything in order to darken her skin tone. But, this also is probably due to her tendency to work late, staying indoors most of the time for work. She's normally seen in suits or appropriate business clothing for court, being a former lawyer. But now, she's more seen in casual clothing, like jeans and various shirts appropriate for the weather.
Personality: Casey is very stubborn to people, but will warm up to people as she gets to know them. She doesn't show her emotions often, unless it's to someone who she knows very well. But if you can read eyes, they give all her emotions away, even when she tries to hide it. Many of the cases she working on during her tenure in SVU affected her, but most of the time people couldn't see it on the outside. She tends to see the law as "black and white" following it to the letter without sympathy for the people who are involved. She only caves when she's convinced to by the detectives or the other circumstances. She also shows a deep caring towards the mentally ill due to her engagement to a man with schizophrenia in her final year of law school.
Abilities: Being a former ADA, she can argue pretty well. With her stubbornness, she won't back down, and will try to achieve justice in any way she can. Other than that, she's very articulate, and great at conducting herself in front of people, with her experience in the courtroom.
Weaknesses: She's fairly stubborn, sometimes to a very concerning point. She doesn't show emotions, so sometimes she'll go into slight depression without getting assistance. For DC purposes, she's probably a bit more depressed than normal, due to her timeline. Being disbarred and within a few weeks, Clover attacked Manhattan and she was left in Manhattan. Other than that, she's a typical human, and can be hurt/maimed/killed in any way that a human can.
Manhattanite or outsider? Manhattanite. (In canon, she lives in the Upper West Side)
History: Not very much is known about Casey before she appeared in the SVU office as the new ADA after Alexandra Cabot, but, there are a few things that are known. Her father was a Door Gunner in the Vietnam War, and this makes her a big supporter of the US Military. She was raised Catholic and is still Catholic in her adult life.
In her final year of law school, Casey was engaged to a man named Charlie, who was schizophrenic. She was attacked by him in her home during one of his psychotic episodes. She didn't have the police press charges and this was when she finally ended the relationship. Charlie became homeless, and he was found dead as a "John Doe" a few years later. This is what makes Casey care so much for people with mental illnesses, and leads to one of her problems later in her career.
Casey worked in white collar crime before she was assigned to the SVU department. This was after Alex Cabot was placed in the Witness Protection Program, thus leaving the position open. After her first case, she actually wanted to be reassigned, and went to the DA, Arthur Branch, to request this. She didn't believe that she could handle the types of cases presented to her. Branch refused, revealing that he thought she was the best choice for the position. She stayed on and became more at ease with the cases, even though she was still repulsed by them.
Casey went into the new position with attitude, wanting to leave her mark. She immediately seems to make enemies of the two detectives, Stabler and Benson, because she showed up at a crime scene doubting their work and then interfered with an interrogation. It took a while before she began to understand the mentality of the SVU team, and it helped having a conversation with Captain Cragen about this. Later, she finally began to connect with the detectives, developing a great professional and personal relationship with them.
Casey has one of the best success rates, have a 71% win rate, while most other ADA's have one in the 40% range. Even with this, she's had her share of controversies while in her position.
She sabotaged a competency hearing for a rapist who had schizophrenia. She did this so he wouldn't get extradited to Louisiana, where he would have faced execution. Jack McCoy had become the DA at this point, and he called Casey into his office and threatened her with disbarment and having her fired if she abused her authority again.
This threat didn't stop her from violating due process when she was prosecuting a police officer who had raped two illegal immigrants. She had lied to her superiors, and was called to the judge's chambers. She was informed that the DA refused to re-file charges against the officer and she was now going to have to face the Bar association. She faced her fate, and was disbarred.
After being disbarred, she was distant from her former colleagues in SVU. She stayed in Manhattan, working to find another position somewhere, knowing that her record would proceed her wherever she went. A few months later, she managed to run into Elliot and Olivia on the street, and didn't tell them what had happened, figuring they would find out anyway later. They went to have dinner and catch up, while the detectives were on their off time, and that was when Cloverfield attacked the city.
The trio had tried to run, but the two detectives told Casey to go on without them, they needed to do their job and make sure people made it out safely. She refused, telling them that she would help them, even if she wasn't a part of the department anymore. As they went on, they were separated, and Casey had a somewhat close encounter with Cloverfield, and went to hide as quickly as possible. Even though she tried, she was hit by a piece of concrete and blacked out, waking up later to a very different Manhattan, with no clue what had happened to her friends.
